The book is divided into thirteen categories of subject matter: General reference; geology and geophysics; geomorphology and hydrology; soils; climate; flora and fauna; settlement; population; primary production; manufacturing; tertiary activities; society and culture; the Irish landscape and its representation on topographical maps. Sections 1 and 13 were prepared under the direction of the Irish National Committee of Geography. For each of the others the Board secured the cooperation of acknowledge experts. To further enhance this magnificent book, Baptista Boazio's 1599 map of Ireland has been reproduced on the endpapers.
