| The journal of Marco Polo is one of the world`s most fascinating and popular travelogues, the sole Western source in the Renaissance for factual details about the fabled Far East and the only material available on many parts of Central Asia until the late 19th century. Written in 1298 while Marco Polo, a Venetian sea captain at this point, was a prisoner of war in Genoa, the journal covers twenty-six years spent mostly in China at the court of Kublai Khan, and vividly describes his travels through the Arab world, Persia, Tibet, India, Sumatra, and East Africa. In addition it introduced the West to the existence of unheard-of wonders: hashish, asbestos, coal, and paper money, among other things. This edition is illustrated with remarkable pictures by the Czech photographer Werner Forman, who followed the routes Marco Polo travelled and photographed fascinating sights which can have changed little since the great explorer saw them nearly seven hundred years ago.
